I used to go to a bakery on Chapel St in Melbourne that had the best filled rolls around. Quick, fresh, cheap, made to order and the perfect lunch to pick up on my walk from Prahran Markets to my apartment on Greville St. Gosh, I miss those Melbourne days.
Without really knowing it I was eating Bánh mì – the bread was chewier than a regular French baguette and the fillings were a strange mix not typically found in a European bakery. Plus, it was called N-Tran and was managed entirely by smiling Vietnamese woman – so I probably should have guessed….
Now that I know what to look out for, Bánh mì stores are starting to pop up around Auckland and I am 100% happy about this. My current fave is Viet Sandwich on Elliot St – a little area of food canteens that hums in the lunchtime sun.

Clik here to view. A traditional Bánh mì consists of pork (or another cured meat, but pork is the classic), pate, mayo, carrot, chilli, cucumber, and coriander. They’re fresh, delicious, and a really nice departure from the typical chicken/avo/lettuce filled roll that fills most of our lunch options!
